Mr. Crazy Baboy: A Must-Try Korean Restaurant in Los Baños

August 16, 2018

Mr. Crazy Baboy is a Korean grill restaurant in Los Baños near the UPLB campus. It’s one of the Korean restaurants that sprouted in Elbi for the past few years.

And by the past few years, I actually meant the years after I graduated from the university! Why were there suddenly tons of Korean restaurants and cafes and even a student organization for KPOP fans after I left? Where were you when I had no college friends and when I spent years wondering when I could finally try samgyupsal? I swear, greater things happened after I graduated. Anyway.

I don’t visit Elbi as much as I want to, but my sister, who regularly does, brags about the new restaurants she tries everytime she visits. So when we spent an entire day in UPLB for her pre-nuptial shoot, we had dinner at a Korean restaurant right after.

I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t had samgyupsal in months, but I seriously enjoyed everything we ordered that night. 10/10 would recommend. [Read more…]

Unlimited Korean BBQ at Samgyupsalamat in Malate, Manila

August 6, 2016

After more than a year of not seeing each other, my college roommate and I finally got to go ona date again. Aika is one of the few people in college I regularly see. Well, she’s also a high school friend but it’s really in college that we bonded.

We agreed to meet in Taft one Saturday in July, and she said she wanted Korean. It more than surprised that she suggested it, but I was more than glad to say yes. After all, when do I say no to Korean food? There are many affordable Korean restaurants in Manila, but I picked Samgyupsalamat because I wanted to try it for the longest time. Partly because I am like the witty name, and you know how corny I am.

Samgyupsalamat is located at Leon Guinto Street so Aika and I walked to the restaurant from the LRT Taft station. We almost missed it but good thing they have a sign out front. We were lucky to arrive early. The place was quiteempty when we got there, but at past 12, the restaurant started filling up and there was even a line outside. It was definitely a good sign!

We only looked at the Samgyupsalamant menu for like a second when we decided to go for the eat-all-you-can Korean BBQ because we were famished anyway. And it was worth it.

Birthday Celebration at Cafe Chosun in Malate, Manila

July 15, 2016

26th birthday

If there’s anything about turning 26 that’s different from my other birthdays, it’s that I was no longer dreading it. Maybe it’s because I had a flight to catch the next day. Or maybe it’s because I was looking forward to my birthday dinner at Cafe Chosun in Malate. Or maybe I am maturing a little bit, and I realized that growing a little older isn’t so bad.

After researching and researching where to eat for dinner that day, my sister and I decided on Cafe Chosun. Good thing it was open 24 hours because we had dinner quite late. It was raining hard on my birthday, and as usual, the streets of Makati were flooded. We almost got stranded, but no rain could dampen my spirits. After all, it was my birthday.

I’m no longer a birthday grinch! [Read more…]

Hwangso-Ga Korean Buffet in Ermita, Manila

March 3, 2015

hwangsoga korean buffet malate 2

My mother celebrated her birthday last month, but it’s difficult to arrange a dinner with all of us present. It was only last Sunday when we had a proper celebratory dinner. Since ate’s the one treating us, she chose the restaurant!

We headed to Hwangso-ga in Ermita, Manila, which is a Korean buffet restaurant along Adriatico St. It’s across the street from Robinson’s Place Manila so it’s easy to find. It’s also beside Mak Chang where we had dinner last time.

Though they didn’t have the best-tasting samgyupsal in town, I still immensely enjoyed dinner. I know that samgyupsal and bulgogi are the most popular dishes Korean dishes in the country, but I love Korean food in general. That’s why I’m glad that the restaurant had other offerings aside from the unlimited samgyup and brisket. Woohoo.

We arrived at Hwangsoga at around 8 p.m., so there weren’t that many diners. However, the buffet table was still filled with all the yummy Korean dishes. [Read more…]

Sunday Dinner at Makchang, Malate

January 11, 2015

makchang malate

Another Sunday, another Korean restaurant to fill our stomach!

For my sister’s last day of vacation, we went to Manila to have dinner at Hwang So Ga, a Korean buffet dinner along Adriatico.  But we arrived in Manila quite late so we went to Mak Chang instead, which is just beside the buffet restaurant.

I first read about Mak Chang in my favorite food blog, Jin Loves to Eat! Then a high school friend (hi Annie!) said that she likes Mak Chang, too. We often eat Korean in Makati but we’re too lazy to try other restaurants aside from Korean Palace or Korean Village. So this is a good change, and I personally enjoyed it.

Mak Chang is really simple inside, with little to no interior designing at all. But don’t let the hole-in-wall aura fool you, because the food really packed a punch. There are only a handful of round tables and it was full from the time we walked in till we walked out. [Read more…]
