Surviving Zambales: Anawangin

May 29, 2011

It has been two weeks since my Zambales trip, and I’m only blogging about it now. It’s really more because of my lousy internet connection (at home, at my office, at my dorm room) that I kept pushing this back. I was scared at first because my closest friends at work didn’t come. You know how I tend to be anti-social, right? But I still had a lot of fun and I think I wasn’t that awkward during the entire trip. My Zambales trip was really something I will never forget because of so many reasons:

  1. It was my first company outing;
  2. The trip was really a test of endurance and not a company outing;
  3. Zambales is just so beautiful.

We went to Pundakit on May 16. We didn’t stay there for long, though. The beach was really pretty. It was still early but the sun’s beating down on us already. After dropping off our luggage, we immediately rode the boat to Anawangin island. If Pundakit was beautiful, Anawangin was just breath-taking. I kind of wish I’m exaggerating. I have no photo to prove my point, though. There’s a river inside the island and even the scene there was gorgeous.

The May Tradition

May 14, 2011

When I said that I started joining the Santacruzan since the summer I learned how to walk, I wasn’t joking. I learned to walk 2-km straight even before I learned how to drink milk from a glass. I cannot remember a summer from my childhood that I didn’t join the Santacruzan (a.k.a. Flores de Mayo a.k.a. Tapusan a.k.a. Sagala). There were times when I even joined the thing a couple of times during that same summer.

Mommy’s Day

May 8, 2011

As I grow older, I realize how I am really like mother. I didn’t see it when I was a child. She hates how I “inherited” her social skills which basically means we both like keeping to ourselves and we don’t really like socializing that much. But I like how this similarity makes her understand me the way other people don’t. I don’t tell everything to my mother but it somehow becomes our bond. She understands the words I couldn’t even tell her. I love her more for it.

To the most beautiful woman in the world who loves me unconditionally. To the fiercest person I know who never lets anyone walk on her and the people she loves, Happy Mother’s Day Mommy! I may not be the sweetest and kindest daughter in the world but I do love you with all my heart. I love you!

The Summer Heat is Killing Me

May 6, 2011

  • Hi. The bus ride home only took me an hour and a half. They were also showing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the bus so that was fun!
  • I almost fell asleep during our Roadshow at work earlier. Basically, someone from the HR department had a presentation to discuss the new handbook. It took me a great deal of will power to stay awake.
  • I don’t want to go back to my dorm. It’s the hottest place I’ve ever been to. I swear I’d rather sunbathe all day than stay the night in my dorm room. Even when the electric fan’s pointing directly at me (my face, my body, my whole effin’ being), with less than half a meter from where I lay, I still sweat profusely. Please don’t let me go back! I beg youuuuu. [Read more…]

52 Books: April Books

May 3, 2011

I got a little lazy last month and only read four books. It was a good reading month, I wish I read another book but I somehow feel like I’ve been reading too much. You know what I mean? But I swear I’ll get back to reading soon! I have bought seven books from various book sales last and I should get started on those. Also, I started my Harry Potter reread. I doubt I’d finish the seven books by July.

1. Looking for Alaska by John Green

So how do I even begin to describe this book? I have conflicting feelings about it. I love the characters, I love their intricacies. I love how smart they can be and I love how they can be so deep. So deep that I sometimes raise my eyebrows. I believe I do not understand many of the characters at all. I often think, was I like that in high school? I hope not.

You see Looking for Alaska is a really good book. The prose is awesome, a lot of pretty words derived from these supposed smart and “deep” characters. But though the plot is exciting enough, I don’t like it that much because I just don’t get Alaska at all. I don’t get why people fall in love with her. I don’t get how she could be a good character. I do not like her, but her flaws are the reason why we a have a story. Maybe I could have given this book five stars but my feelings for Alaska clouded my judgement. I cannot fully love a book when I hate the lead so much. Not just Alaska, too. I do not like Miles. He is okay at first then he got overly emotional and hormonal. But I love the secondary characters, Colonel and Takumi. They salvage the somewhat overly dramatic plot.

Will I read this book again? Maybe. Do I recommend you to read it? Yes. Because it has beautiful prose and so pretty words. And it’s though-provoking and it’s never a waste to read a book that will make you think. [Read more…]
