Day One in Seoul: Changgyeonggung Palace

April 29, 2012

How do I even start to write about the trip that I’d been dreaming of since I was 13? I’ve been thinking how I could properly record this memory and I couldn’t come up with the best plan. There’s just too many things to say about everything that happened during our 5-day trip to Korea. One thing I know for sure is that it’s definitely the best trip of my life. I want to cry just by thinking about it and I’m not even exaggerating. Heh.

It’s no secret that I love Korea. The amount of ‘congratulations’ and ‘I’m so happy for you’ I received the past week can attest to that. Heh. I guess I’m not so quiet about my Korya trip. How could I? How could I possibly contain my excitement?!?

I actually thought we wouldn’t push through with this trip. A week before our trip, we still didn’t have our tourist Visa and a day before the trip, we still didn’t have a place to stay in. We also had some problems with money matters, and we figured that this trip wouldn’t exactly be cheap. I didn’t even finish packing before going to Makati that week because I already believed that this trip was no more. I didn’t want to expect too much. But my parents agreed to go through with it and I almost cried! /sigh

Our flight was scheduled on 1:20 AM, April 19, 2012. I filed for a three-day leave since we’d be staying for 5 days.  Good thing we have relatives who volunteered to take us to the airport! Whoosh. We arrived at around 10PM and gave us enough time to check in and eat dinner. We also didn’t have to wait long, and I hate waiting especially when I’m so excited. Hee.

It was also the first time my sister and I wore boots! We’re not exactly fashion forward, and dressing up in the Philippines is just too bothersome. However, we’ve heard A LOT of things about the fashion in Korea and we watch tons of Kdramas, anyway, to know that we should really dress up a little.  Also, it was probably the only place we could ever wear boots! Let’s abuse that opportunity, shall we? (I’ll never understand people who wear boots here. Unless it’s raining. Or cold.) My boots are kind of childish, though. But hey, I got it on sale so I don’t care.

We waited for less than an hour before we could finally board the plane. Surprise! I saw a grade school classmate who probably no longer knows me. I kept staring at her because she’s pretty I’m waiting for her to recognize. But she gave no sigh of recognition. Oh well.

I tried so hard to sleep in the plane since we’d be landing at around 6AM, leaving no time for us to sleep at all. I do not want to spend too much time resting once we arrive. We only had five days and I want to make the most out of it! But I couldn’t sleep at all. I only had about 2 hours of sleep, and I convinced myself that I could function well without decent sleep. And I did. Ha! I was drunk on fangirl spirit.

We arrived 30 minutes ahead of schedule, or maybe I got the time confused since South Korea’s an hour ahead. It didn’t really sink in that easily. I had a hard time convincing myself that I’m in Korea. Home of KPOP and oppas and saranghe. Or maybe because I was still in the airport and besides the signs written in Korean and the staff all Koreans, I could probably still be in the Philippines.

incheon airport arrival

I only fully absorbed (??) that I was in Korea when we stepped outside the airport. I had never felt so cold in my life. I think it was 6 degrees outside. And I though Spring wouldn’t be so cold! It was the coldest I had ever experienced. I love it.

We didn’t get to take that much photos in the airport because our bus would leave in 5 minutes. Our bus stop (Bus #6011 – Sungkyunkwan Station) was on the other side of the airport so we had to move quickly. Huhu. I only got one shot inside the airport where 3/4 of Kdramas film. It broke my heart a little. But still! I was in Korea, and at that point, nothing could break my spirit.

Incheon is beautiful. Though we only saw a vast space of land, I still think it’s beautiful. It’s amazing how they lined up the streets with spring flowers, and I had my first glance of cherry blossoms! Not all trees were in full bloom, though. Spring’s only starting and it was still quite cold, but it’s the type of cold that I can tolerate and definitely love.

I didn’t want to sleep because I didn’t want to miss anything. Besides, there’s a showbiz magazine in every seat. I couldn’t understand anything but I still enjoyed browsing through it. After a couple of minutes, I fell asleep! Good thing I didn’t sleep the whole way through. I was too afraid that we’d miss our stop.

The trip was quite enjoyable anyway because hey, I was in Korea! I could be faced with the sight of traffic and I’d think, “OMG, I’m stuck in traffic! In Korea!” And yes, there’s a little traffic but it was tolerable. It gave me more chance to take in everything. We passed by a lot of universities (Hongdae, Ewha, etc.) and a couple of palaces, too. I was surprised to see palaces in the middle of the city! But I notice how it’s not out of place at all. Yep, a palace in the middle of a bustling city seems so commonplace.

We stayed at Backpackers Mr. Sea in Jongno-gu, Seoul and rented a family room. It was cheaper than expected but the place was nice. The room reminds me of a Kdrama heroine’s apartment. Ha! But it was really nice and there’s this one staff who’s really cute. OMG. My sister and I were like, parang model! He arrived just after us and when he took of us his jacket with this adorable look on his face… swoon.

hyehwa-dong seoul
Once we had unpacked, we realized that we forgot a lot of things such as shampoo and conditioner! My sister and I decided to buy what we forgot to bring (it was a lot!). To our surprise, they don’t sell shampoo nor conditioner at convenience stores! And instant coffee on sachets! I remember this one thing my college instructor told me, how other countries don’t sell tingi-tingi products. Okay.

We were about to go back to our dorm when we saw our father. Together, we found an underground grocery and tried to buy everything we need. And more. It took us a while to realize that they call conditioner rinse. We also bought snacks we could bring us with us when we tour, some chocomilk, many yogurt, and three packs of Yakult. We made sure to drink the Yakult Rooftop Prince style! [Read more…]

Hwangbo in Manila!

April 9, 2012

(WARNING: IMAGE AND TEXT HEAVY AND EXTREMELY EMOTIONAL.)

I’ve been a fan of Hwangbo since her Xman days, though I don’t follow her activities as often as other fans do. But still, I call myself a fan because she’s just one of those celebrities. Jex convinced me to watch Hwangbo’s stint in We Got Married, and I’m so glad I did! I didn’t watch it at first because I didn’t like Kim HyunJoong, but he’s just so fun to watch! Kim HyunJoong and Hwangbo definitely made a good couple. The show also made me love Hwangbo more! Just look around online and you’ll have a gazillion reasons to like her.

When Ate Karen told me that Hwangbo’s coming to the Philippines and she and Anna would wait for her in the airport, I immediately said that I’d go with her. Then she said that she’s arriving at that very day! I almost went into a fit because I was wearing heels and you must know that heels shouldn’t really be worn when you’re chasing after celebrities! Haha. But heels and all, Ate Karen and I went to the airport and to meet up later with Anna. We risked a lot of things (A LOT OF THINGS!) but it was all worth it.

It was my first time to go to the airport just to wait for the arrival of Koreans. My interaction with U-Kiss doesn’t count because I’m not even a fan and it was coincidental. And I just wanted to take a photo with them because I like good-looking Koreans. Heh. This time, it’s different. It was exciting, exhilarating, nerve-wracking, heart-wrenching, and every other adjective to describe my heart going going 90 mph due to anticipation. Due to our dedication, Alex actually had a hard time believing that we were waiting for a female celebrity. Nope. Hwangbo’s definitely a girl and not a member of a male idol group.

We arrived at the airport 30 minutes before her plane landed and we did a lot of waiting. Anna still wasn’t there so Ate Karen and I didn’t know where to go. Anna said to approach the people who have tarps and we don’t see anyone holding Hwangbo tarps! We looked for people who look like fans (Haha! Fangirls definitely have an aura.) and spotted some girls holding Bench paper bags and bouquets  of flowers. We knew at first glance that they’re Hwangbo’s fans! Heh.

9G: The Red Room

February 27, 2012

I guess February 25 now marks the day that I went back into the DongBang fandom. I never really left but for the past years, I really wasn’t there. I make sure to update myself every now and then but I wasn’t the same fan back in 2007. 2004-2008 were the peak of my fangirl days. It was the time when I would save every picture, download every video, and cry over all the break-up rumors. Then college happened and I suddenly didn’t have enough time to be a fangirl. I never stopped being a Cassie but it’s hard when life is getting more interesting. I suddenly couldn’t afford to just stay in front of the computer as much as before.

Then the lawsuit happened and I suddenly felt like a failure as a fan. I’ve been itching to get back into the fandom even though there are two groups now. I didn’t know it would take me this long to fully understand that I may fall in love with other actors and boy bands but my fangirl heart will always, always belong to DBSK. Nothing will change that, I guess. Cassiopeia Philippines’s 9th gathering is like an epiphany for me.

Anyway, enough with the drama. Saturday has been one of the best days of my fangirl life (April 19-23 , 2012would definitely be the best!). The last time I attended a gathering was on March 2007. Yes, the first gathering! It’s nice to say that I was there from the very start but I simply am not a consistent fan. But like what I’ve told Haszelle, I’ll make it up to the boys somehow.

I was really planning on going but it was Haszelle who made an effort to make sure that I would go. Haha! When I was an active DBSK fan, Haszelle that time still wasn’t into them. When she became a fan, that’s when I was already lying low from all the emotional hurdles of being a fangirl. And now, we’re finally fangirling at the same. It’s fun to be a fan (no pun intended!) but it’s really more exciting when you have someone to fangirl with. She already has a lot of Cassie friends, and she’s truly my only one. Haha.

9G was held at the top floor of Fully Book The Fort. Haszelle still wasn’t there when I arrived so I panicked a little. I attended the KPOPCON3 alone and I didn’t plan to do the same for 9G. I don’t know. I was really nervous going to 9G especially when I started seeing people wearing the CassPH shirt. I know how Cassies can be extremely devoted to the boys and I haven’t be as crazy and devoted to the boys as these girls. I started wondering if a fangirl like me is still welcome. And I am glad to know that I still am. (/crying)

Happy Two Years, YongSeo

February 11, 2012

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxmgX-a2reY]

In my 8 years of fangirling, I have never shipped anyone this hard. I wasn’t even a fan of the groups they’re in (SNSD and CNBLUE) before I watched the show! But two months later, I’m a die-hard Goguma who is too obsessed with the couple for her own good. I’m trying to tone it down a bit but it’s difficult when I feel like wailing whenever I see a YongSeo photo. Whenever I’m getting bored at work, I look at YongSeo pics. So yeah, I am often tempted to just write about YongSeo for my write ups. Heh.

I know that two months is still too short compared to the two years other Gogumas have devoted in supporting the couple. But I hope it doesn’t make me less of a fan. I promise I love them with all my heart, too. (Ha! I’m also not sure why I’m defending myself here.) So far, I’ve only watched two WGM pairings and I am positive that I won’t like any other pairing more. YongSeo couple it is for me. I kind of hate myself for not gaining interest in the show two years ago. I bet it was awesome to be there from the start.

You see, I didn’t even like Yong Choding before I watched WGM. He’s just Jung YongHwa who played ShinWoo, the stoic OG in You’re Beautiful. He’s just LeeShin in Heartstrings, the actor who didn’t know how to act. (Please shoot me now!) But after watching WGM, he’s now THE Jung YongHwa who composes beautiful songs, who sings with that amazing voice. He’s Yong Seobang, SeoHyun’s husband who cares so much for her, and would go to great length to make things a lot better for her. He’s Yong Choding, the childlike leader of CNBLUE and one of the few people who can bring out Hyun’s true personality.

Before watching WGM, I didn’t even know SeoHyun’s name! Heck, the only one I knew from SNDS was Yoona and SeoHyun was just a familiar face. But I now know that she’s the girl who loves sweet potatoes so much that someone would even give her a sweet potato land for her birthday. She’s Hyun who has a lot of dreams in life and looks up to someone like Ban KiMoon. She’s someone who simply doesn’t believe in luck and instead, strives hard for the things she wants. She believes in hard work and perseverance. Her smile is precious because you can only see it when she’s with the people she’s close to. [Read more…]

KPOPCON 3

January 14, 2012

What’s a better way to end the year but by celebrating being a fangirl?

Every KPOPCON, I plan on attending but there’s always something stopping me. It’s usually just because I didn’t feel like a big enough fan to join the festivities. But for the last KPOPCON, I decided that I wanted to buy some merchandise so there was nothing stopping me. (I actually wanted to buy a lot of things but it didn’t occur me that I would need TONS of money to buy everything. Yeah. </3)

I’m so glad I went! I was supposed to go back to Laguna that day and I didn’t really have anyone to go with. Alie wasn’t sure if she could make it, but I told myself that instances like this rarely happens. Besides, I was high on fangirl spirit at that time because of We Got Married. Heh.

Going to Ortigas was quite an adventure since I hadn’t been there by myself. It was quite scary but the KPOPCON FB page provided directions so I followed my heart (and my friends’ instructions) and prayed that I wouldn’t get lost. When I arrived at Megamall, I asked the guards for directions on how to reach Megatent. Apparently, I looked like a fangirl that other fangirls approached me! I guess I gave off a vibe or something. Hee. I made two friends that day, Jen and Louise! They were the ones who approached me in megamall. We went to Megatent together because they also didn’t know the way. Heh.

Do fangirls have this certain aura? Even the FX drivers know at first sight that we were on our way to KPOPCON. When we entered the FX, it was already filled with other fans. I am easily amused by things like this.
